Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra.

Miguel de Cervantes published Don Quixote in 1605, a satire of chivalric novels considered the first modern novel. He lost his left hand at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 and was held captive by Barbary pirates for five years. Don Quixote was immensely successful, but Cervantes struggled financially and his marriage was unhappy. He believed his best work was The Travails of Persiles and Segismunda.
